Invisalign FAQ: Proven Answers for a Confident Smile
Curious about clear aligners but not sure where to begin? This Invisalign FAQ covers the questions we hear most often at Tina Reed Orthodontics in Squirrel Hill. Whether you are a teen, a parent, or an adult who wants a straighter smile without traditional braces, you deserve clear, straightforward information. Dr. Tina Reed, DMD, MS, is glad to walk you through what to expect.
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a series of custom-made, clear aligners that gradually move your teeth into better positions. Each set is slightly different from the one before it, so your smile shifts a little at a time. The aligners are nearly invisible, which is a big reason so many patients choose them.
How does Invisalign work?
Dr. Reed studies your teeth and bite, then designs a step-by-step plan for your smile. You switch to a new set of aligners on the schedule we give you, and each set applies gentle pressure to guide your teeth along that plan. We see you periodically to make sure everything is moving as expected.
How long does Invisalign treatment take?
Every smile is different, so treatment time varies. Many patients finish in about 12 to 18 months, but Dr. Reed will give you a personalized estimate after your exam. Wearing your aligners as directed is the best way to stay on schedule.
Does Invisalign hurt?
Most patients describe mild pressure or tightness rather than pain, usually for the first few days with each new set. There are no wires or brackets to rub against your cheeks. If something does not feel right, call us, and we will help.
How many hours a day do I need to wear my aligners?
Plan on 20 to 22 hours a day. Consistent wear is what keeps your treatment on track. The good news is that the aligners are removable, so the time they are out for meals and brushing fits neatly into your day.
Can I still eat and drink what I like?
Yes, because you take your aligners out to eat. Keep them in for plain water only. Brush your teeth before putting the aligners back in, which keeps food from getting trapped against your teeth.
Is Invisalign a good option for teens?
It can be. Invisalign for Teens lets younger patients straighten their teeth without brackets and wires, which many find easier for sports, music, and school photos. It works best when a teen is committed to wearing the aligners consistently, and Dr. Reed will talk honestly with you and your teen about whether it is a good fit.
Is Invisalign as effective as braces?
For many patients, yes. Invisalign can address a wide range of alignment and bite concerns, though some cases are better suited to braces. After a thorough exam, Dr. Reed will recommend the option that will serve you best, even if that is not clear aligners.
What happens at my first visit?
We start with a conversation about your goals, then Dr. Reed examines your teeth and bite. We take digital X-rays and use our iTero scanner to capture a 3D image of your smile. The scanner is a small handheld wand, so there is no messy impression material. Dr. Reed completed a three-year orthodontic residency at the University of California, San Francisco, and that training guides every plan she creates.
What happens after my teeth are straightened?
You will move into retention with custom retainers. Teeth naturally drift over time, so wearing your retainers as directed protects the work you have put in and keeps your results in place for the long run.
Do you accept insurance, and what payment options are available?
We do not participate with insurance networks, but we file all insurance claims for our patients so you are reimbursed directly. We also offer in-house financing and accept Visa, Mastercard, and American Express.
Where are you located, and when are you open?
You will find us at 2345 Murray Avenue, Suite 210, in Pittsburgh, an easy trip by foot, bike, bus, or car from Shadyside, Oakland, and Regent Square. We are open 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.
